“Where do I get egg-laying chickens?"
This question arises by Nina who works as an intern for LekaGape for four weeks. She wants to organize some chickens for making sure that the over 100 children and women in the Shelter are provided with fresh eggs.

The 23-year-old youth and home educator has already worked from 2005 to 2006 for five months at LekaGape. She has supported the organization by driving the children and adolescents to school.

Furthermore, she renovated a chicken house as well as being a member of the project “Aquaponics”. The project Aquaponics deals with the independent supply of the Shelter with high quality and healthy food like fishes, eggs and vegetables for the in many cases HIV infected children and women in the Shelter.

From now on, before going back to Germany, Nina’s last tasks are to pave the yard as well as to organize chickens for the new repaired chicken house. In that case the attended children, youngsters and women in the Shelter could profit by the eggs. However, for Nina remains an open question, where you can buy in Phalaborwa egg-laying chickens, because they are a rarity  in the northeast of South Africa.
